What is DVD RAM?

DVD RAM is a DVD Format which allows for the recording and erasing of data, much like the DVD-RW and DVD+RW formats. In other words, you can read data from it, write data and erase existing data and rewrite the disc with new data. That is why it is also known as DVD-RAM rewritable.

However, unlike the other two formats (DVD+/-RW) it can’t be said to be a universal DVD format. Only certain audio visual equipment manufacturers like Panasonic, Toshiba and Hitachi support it.

Basically, the DVD-RAM functions much like a floppy disk in that you can run programs from it. It has a storage capacity of 4.7GB for a single layer disc and 9.4GB for a dual layer disc.  However, first generation discs had a storage capacity of 2.6GB (single sided) and 5.2 GB (double sided)
