What is DVD Copy Protection?

Every store-bought movie comes with copy protection. Such a DVD is referred to as a protected DVD.

You can watch the movie any number of times you want. Feel it’s a good movie? Want to make a copy of it for a friend? You’ll not be able to make a copy.

This is because a store-bought movie has a built-in code which prevents you from making a copy of it.

Copy protection is implemented in the form of CSS – Content Scrambling System

.
CSS is actually a key set which includes authentication key, player key, title key, disc key and encrypted key, among others This key set is meant to prevent the unauthorized copying of DVD discs.

Basically, the presence of CSS in a DVD means that if you buy a DVD movie, you’ll not be able to copy the movie to blank discs and distribute it to your friends.
