When was the DVD 
 format first announced?

The DVD Specification Version 1.0 was first announced in 1995 but was finalized in September 1996

When was the DVD player and discs first made available to the public?DVD players and discs hit the market in November 1996 in Japan. They were available in March 1997 in the United States. Europe had access to DVD players and discs in 1998 and in 1999 they were made available in Australia.

What does DVD stand for?
Originally the DVD forum called it Digital Video Disc. However, some members of the forum felt that it should be called Digital Versatile Disc, as its functions go beyond storing video data.

What's the difference between DVD physical formats and application formats?
DVD physical formats are DVD-ROM,  DVD-R, DVD-RW and so on. Whereas the application formats are DVD Video and DVD Audio
