Can DVD Players Play CDs?

Modern day DVD players can read most CD formats without any issues.

However, it depends on what kind of content the CD carries.

Let's now find out whether DVD players can play CDs and what kinds they can and can't..

Audio CDs

If your CD contains audio, then your DVD player would be able to read it, whether  the audio is on CD-ROM, CD-R, CD+R, CD-RW or CD+RW..

If it's an SACD (Super Audio CD) then your DVD player can;t read it unless it's a double-layer SACD or hybrid SACD.

A double-layer SACD comes with two layers - an SACD layer and a CD layer.

Your DVD player would be able to read the CD layer but not the SACD layer.

Video on CDs

A DVD player can't play video copied on a CD. The video has to be properly burned into a DVD format.

There's an exception though. If you're in the Asian region, you can play video on a CD  through a VCD (Video Compact Disc) or SVCD (Super Video Compact Disc).

Also, you can't play video for a Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD).

Still Images on CD

Modern DVD players will read still images stored on all types of CD - CD-ROM, CD-R, CD+R, CD-RW or CD+RW - except SACD.

If you have an older model DVD player, please check your manual and find out whether you DVD can play CDs and what CD formats they support.
